Ricky Gervais on becoming an Athiest

Gervais became an atheist at the age of eight when Bob, his older brother by 11 years, asked him why he believed in God. "My mother went 'Bob!' and that was it. I knew she was hiding something and he was telling the truth. My tool to understanding throughout my life has been non-verbal communication, observing the minutia of human behaviour. It's in my acting and my writing and that was where it began."

His mum's word vs my mum's, I guess.

Maybe his mum didn't really believe either.

The quote definately seems to imply that, your right.

I think there's a YouTube clip about Gervais' summary of the first few chapters of Genesis somewhere. Very droll humour indeed.

Gervais is an idiot. It was a great shock to me to discover that the David Brent character is... what he is like as himself.

:D hahaha. Yes, well perhaps Gervais' mum was an idiot too for raising a boy like David Brent. Michael, in The Office DVDs, Gervais actually said that the David Brent chracter was modelled on a number of bosses that he had worked for over a number of years.

What's your primary beef with Gervais, Michael?

And Haydn, I'm truly disappointed in the nature of your comments. Gervais is a middle aged man - he's responsible for his own behaviour.

David, there goes that acid tongue of yours. Didn't you watch the DVD set and actually see what Gervais said with his own lips? You really do know how to talk out the wrong end. Anyway, I'm done talking to you here.

Although Brent was modelled on the 'seedy boss' character, if you watch the youtube clip of Gervais and Rowan Williams in an interview you see a little bit what Michael is on about. He was a bit of an incoherent and ungracious mess.

Certainly clumsy and not in the same intellectual league as Rowan Williams, who as always, was a class act, but he didn't come across as being ungracious to me. Especially when you consider his demeanour alongside people like Richard Dawkins, who just sounds like a pretentious tool.

:) Good point.

His performance in those movies "Night at the Museum" were horrid. He came across as just snappy and petty.

I thought he was ungracious because he wouldn't let Williams speak, and was quite interuptive.

But I have to say I think the guy is hilarious, and was a huge fan of the Office and his podcasts. And yeah haydn, night at the museum was awful.
